You don’t need a recipe for muesli, but you do need to make your own rather than resorting to buying the disgusting packets labeled Muesli on offer in the supermarket. The dusty oats and the occasional piece of almond or sultana is not an appetising way to start your day. The most important ingredient is the oats: make sure you buy organic rolled oats – they are worth the extra cost. What else you put in it is up to you, but if you are lost as to where to start consider the list below. Quantities are based on the size of the packets they come in, not some magical formula of oats:sultanas:nuts etc. For the sultanas, pepitas, sunflowers, cranberries, and apricots, the quantities specified represent half a packet. Remember, if you don’t like some things, leave them out; if you prefer something else, add it in. To get you started:
- 1 kg organic rolled oats
- 250g processed bran
- 150g almonds
- 100g dried apricots, chopped
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- 85g dried cranberries
- 180g sultanas
- 80g pepitas
- 80g sunflower seeds
- Throw all the ingredients in a bowl and mix together. Store in sealed jars.
